    You Are All Butterflies

To the 8th grade class of 2020,

On March 11, 2020 it was announced that schools would be closed for two weeks.  There was much whooping and hollering and cheering and high-fives in the hallways as students left the building for what we all believed was a two week “break.”  Little did we know that that Wednesday would be the last day we would physically be together and see each other for the rest of this school year.  Yes, we were robbed of our time together.  But don’t see yourselves as helpless victims of this robbery.  Instead, look to the future and what is ahead.

You are high-school students now.  Some have asked, “Are we prepared for that next step?” or “Will we be ready for high-school?”  Our answer is an emphatic, “Undoubtedly!”  You are strong and resilient and determined.  You are problem solvers and you are literate in a variety of platforms.  You are creative and resourceful.  You are more technologically savvy than your parents or teachers were at your age, and you will only continue to become more so.

Today, we are connected through little squares on our monitors and screens. We are dependent on Wi-Fi. We wear masks and keep our distance and watch the news warily. But it won’t always be this way. One day, you will look back, with 20/20 hindsight (pun fully intended), and marvel at this time of history you have lived through.

When this is over, how will you emerge?  As a victim of circumstances that you had no control of?  Or with an energy and an optimism that comes with a youthful hope, and a desire to make up for lost time?  Our desire is that you attack this next phase of life – your relationships, your academics, your interests and hobbies, your pursuits in athletics and the arts…everything that you hold dear and commit time to – with an unbridled enthusiasm and passion.  If these times have taught us anything, it is that life is too short to put things off until later.

Our challenge to you:  Don’t let these times shape you.  Instead, shape these times.  Resilience, grit, determination, fight, creativity, resourcefulness, kindness, thoughtfulness, selflessness.  These are words that we hope describe you and your character.  These are traits that we hope you are developing, forging, honing, and strengthening during this time of uncertainty and unprecedented change in the world.

Your character is being tested.  There is a good chance there will be many more tests of this nature in the days to come, more hurdles and obstacles to overcome.  No one knows what “school” will look like in the fall.  But this we do know:  if you stay engaged, stay tuned in, and stay determined to succeed no matter what the circumstances, it won’t matter what “school” looks like next year.  You will already have passed the first test.

Congratulations graduating 8th graders.  Now go out and show the world what you’re made of.
